Today we celebrate Fourth Week of Lent

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:16-18

Thankful Thursday

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution

Lately I’ve been watching the show on Showtime (I’ve been watching the DVD) called The Tudors.  Yes, it’s a bit on the racy side, but I’m finding the historical elements of it far more fascinating.  While I always knew that the Anglican Church came out of the events of Henry VIII’s . . . wife-changing, it was never so obvious to me how intertwined religion was with the whole thing.  I’m at the end of season two right now, and Anne Boleyn’s about to lose her head.  As I watch, it makes me realize how thankful I am that I live in a country where I am free to practice my faith without fear of death!  There are so many places still today where people do not have this right.  That is what I am thankful for this week.
